Before you fly
Things every French traveller should know about Australia.
Drive on the left
Australians drive on the left side of the road, opposite of France. Your French permis de conduire is valid for short stays. Sydney to Cairns is a 28-hour drive, further than Paris to Athens.
Don't pack the charcuterie
Australia bans imported meats, cheeses, and most cured products. Saucisson, jambon cru, fromage non-pasteurisé, all confiscated at customs. Sealed wine in checked luggage is allowed. AUD 5,500+ fines for undeclared food.
English is the only language
Australia is monolingual in practice, even in cosmopolitan Sydney. Hotels, transport, and restaurants operate in English. Bring a translation app for Aboriginal place names and Aussie slang ("arvo", "servo", "macca's").
Type I plug adapter
Australia uses Type I outlets at 230V. French Type E plugs do not fit, but voltage matches France's 230V so no transformer needed, just a €3 adapter.
From our travelers
What French travellers say about us.
“On a réservé les vols pour Sydney puis je me suis souvenu du visa. Application en cinq minutes sur le téléphone, eVisa reçu le lendemain matin. Plus simple que mon dernier passport renewal au consulat.”

“Working Holiday plans for the wife and a tourist eVisa for me. Both submitted Sunday evening from Lyon, both approved Monday morning. The team replied to my question in French within an hour.”

“Trois passeports pour la famille, vol Air France via Singapour. eVisas tous validés en moins de 24 heures. Le rappel sur la charcuterie nous a évité une amende au contrôle douanier de Sydney.”

Questions, answered
Australia eVisa FAQ for French travellers.
Australia's biosecurity rules are unusually strict. Imported meats (charcuterie, saucisson) and most dairy (fromage non-pasteurisé) are prohibited or heavily restricted. Sealed wine in checked luggage is allowed within personal limits. Declare every food item on arrival, undeclared items can result in AUD 5,500+ fines.
Three processing speeds are available, Express is the fastest. Most French applications are approved within 24 business hours, regardless of the speed selected. With the time difference, applications submitted in French evening hours typically clear by the next morning. See the pricing card for the speed options.
From USD $209, with all government fees, document review, support, and tracking included. Three processing speeds are offered, see the pricing card on this page for current rates.
Yes. All French passports issued since 2009 are biometric with an embedded chip. The chip allows Australia's SmartGate at Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane to process you automatically. Any valid biometric French passport works for both the eVisa application and arrival.
Apply with the passport you will actually travel on. The eVisa is linked to your passport number, so a different number on the new book will not match. Wait for the new passport before applying. Standard French passport renewal at the mairie takes around 4 to 6 weeks; expedited service through your préfecture is faster but not guaranteed.
Yes. Every traveller entering Australia needs an individual eVisa, regardless of age. Each child files a separate application linked to their own French passport. France has issued individual biometric passports for minors since 2009, so every child has their own document already.
You apply based on your travel passport, not your French residence status. If your passport is from an Australia eVisa-eligible country, apply with that passport. If not, you will need a different Australian visa class. The carte de résident or carte de séjour on its own does not qualify you for the eVisa.
Minor offences such as old contraventions usually do not prevent approval. Délits and crimes graves involving violence, drugs, or sexual offences can lead to denial under Australia's character requirements. Disclose accurately, as misrepresentation is itself grounds for refusal regardless of the underlying offence.
Not directly. Australia uses its own SmartGate system at Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. Any biometric French passport works with SmartGate, and the line is typically faster than the staffed lane. EU e-Gates programmes only apply on the European side of the trip.
Yes. The Australia eVisa is the same model as the EU's upcoming ETIAS or the US ESTA, an electronic travel authorisation linked to your passport, applied for online. It is valid for one year, multi-entry, with stays up to 90 days per visit. French citizens must hold one before boarding any flight to Australia.
Not from inside Australia on the eVisa. The Working Holiday Visa is a separate class, open to French citizens aged 18-30, granting up to 12 months of work, study, and travel (extendable to 2 to 3 years through specified regional work). It must be applied for and approved before you arrive. France is one of Australia's largest WHV partner countries, around 22,000 French citizens start a WHV each year.
CBD and THC products are tightly controlled in Australia regardless of French availability, do not pack them. For prescription medications, carry the original packaging plus your ordonnance or an English-translated prescription. Some French-prescribed drugs are controlled substances in Australia, particularly opioid painkillers and ADHD treatments. Check the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) list before flying.
