Leave the rest at home.
No photos
No bank statements
No flight bookings
No hotel confirmations

For most cases, your passport is all we need. In the rare instance Australian immigration requests anything further, our team will be in touch to guide you through it.
Before you fly
Things every American should know about Australia.
Seasons are flipped
Australian summer runs December to February, opposite of the US.
Drive on the left
Your US license is valid for short stays. Sydney to Cairns is a 28-hour drive.
Tipping is not expected
Hospitality wages start above AUD 24 per hour. 10% at a fine dinner is already generous.
Bring a plug adapter
Australia uses Type I outlets at 230V. Most US chargers are dual voltage, an adapter is enough.

Questions, answered
Australia eVisa FAQ for US travelers.
Yes. Both are electronic travel authorizations linked to your passport, applied for online. The Australia eVisa is valid for one year, multi-entry, with stays up to 90 days per visit. ESTA is the US equivalent for visa-free travelers entering America.
Three processing speeds are available, Express is the fastest. Most US applications are approved within 24 business hours, regardless of the speed selected. See the pricing card on this page for the speed options.
From USD $209, with all government fees, document review, support, and tracking included. Three processing speeds are offered, see the pricing card on this page for current rates.
You need the US passport book. The passport card is only valid for land and sea travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean. International flights, including to Australia, require the book with at least 6 months remaining validity and 2 blank pages.
Apply with the passport you'll actually travel on. The eVisa is linked to your passport number, so a different number on a new book will not match. Wait for the new passport before applying. Standard US passport renewal currently takes 6 to 8 weeks; expedited service is around 2 to 3 weeks.
Yes. Every traveler entering Australia needs an individual eVisa, regardless of age. That includes infants and minors. Each child files a separate application linked to their own US passport (US passports are issued individually and minors cannot travel on a parent's passport anyway).
You apply based on your travel passport, not your US residency. If your foreign passport is from an Australia eVisa-eligible country, apply with that passport. If it is not eligible, you'll need a different visa class. The Green Card on its own does not qualify you for the eVisa.
Minor offenses such as old misdemeanors usually do not prevent approval. Felonies, recent serious crimes, or convictions involving violence, drugs, or sexual offenses can lead to denial under Australia's character requirements. Disclose accurately, as misrepresentation on the form is itself grounds for refusal regardless of the underlying offense.
Not directly. Australia uses its own SmartGate system at Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane airports. Any modern US ePassport (with the chip) works with SmartGate, and the line is usually faster than the staffed lanes. Global Entry and TSA PreCheck only help on the US side of the trip.
CBD and THC products are tightly controlled in Australia regardless of US state legality. Do not pack them, even small amounts can result in seizure or fines. For prescription medications, carry the original bottle and a doctor's letter. Some US-prescribed drugs including Adderall and certain ADHD treatments are controlled substances in Australia. Check the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) list before flying.
Not on the eVisa. The 90 days stay is the maximum per visit. To stay longer, you would need to leave Australia and apply for a different visa class (such as a longer-term visitor visa or a working visa) before returning. Overstaying triggers an automatic 3-year bar on returning.
No. Once approved, your eVisa is electronically linked to your passport and Australian border officials pull it up automatically at SmartGate or the staffed counter. We still recommend keeping the email confirmation on your phone for peace of mind.
